TeachMeetMoodle

TeachMeetMoodle

Thank you for attending

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/tmmoodle

3rd July 2010 @ Heythrop College, Kensington, London

Meet @ 10.30am

Twitter Hash Tag: #TMMoodle

Contact Me: Email: dhumpherson@gmail.com

   Twitter: @MoodleDan

After attending this years MoodleMoot I couldnt help but think that as the Moodle community grows so does the diversity of the user base who attend. The natural progression of a piece of software with global appeal and a global user base.

There were many presentations to choose from and a generous handfull of keynote speeches across the two day event, most of which I found both informative and inspiring.

While there I met many people who I've been following on Twitter for some time now, I also met lots of new 'moodlers' with a wealth of experience - I always claim its impossible for one person to know everything there is to know about Moodle, just when you think you have a featured tied down someone pops up with a twist or turn on how they utilise the same functionality in a diverse or unique way.

I'd like TeachMeetMoodle to focus on the way Moodle is used in the Primary and Secondary Education sector.

I want to keep the detail brief at this stage, the TeachMeet should be about the people who attend and the exchanges that take place.

Brief Details:

  • I want the Meet to be informal and as accessible as possible
  • I'd like everyone who attends to take something away with them, that means making sure everyone is involved in some way (Give & Take)
  • focus on classroom practice and real use of Moodle features - plugins - extensions
  • I would like to bring our moodle tech / development staff and for them to meet other like minded moodle devs/techs
  • Can we code the sessions / attendees so that we can connect with edumoodlers of interest
  • BectaX speed dating was a good tool??

  • Add your own thoughts here....

For anyone who wants to come the best option is public transport (the College is a 2 minute walk from High Street Kensington tube station) - anyone who wants to bring a car needs to email me (Nadeem n.ahmad@heythrop.ac.uk) first and will need the sat nav post code of W8 5BU.

I want to say a big thank you to all of you who offered to host the event or put me in touch with people who could offer a venue, it was very much appreciated.

  • We (Hamble College) would host, however very south?
  • Why not try a Saturday? Really want to attend but always tricky on school nights (and with kids) @gideonwilliams (I like the idea of holding it on a saturday @moodledan)
  • How does Hertfordshire grab people??
  • Sheffield West CLC - we are interested in developing Moodle as a resource for our schools and for teacher training - we'd be happy to host it if you're looking for a more central location! Dave Gibbs (dgibbs@nwsclc.net)
  • If you're happy for FE colleges to be involved, MidKent College is a potential host
  • How about a Moodle section at TeachMeet - Hampshire for those who are here in the south?

Basic rules for the TeachMeet:

  • Micro-presentations are strictly seven minutes long, nano-presentations two minutes long.
  • Please make sure that what you're showing rent to own homes has actually been done in your classroom or a classroom of a colleague - this isn't blue skies, this is right here, right now stuff.
  • No sales pitches <-- I personally feel strongly about this point

Rules taken from the suggested TeachMeet Rules here...

This is a great idea Dan. I will be in full support and willing to help in any way I can. I'll have a think about London venues. ULCC might be a possibility but this might too much of a good thing. I will contact Ealing Council and see if they have a suitable spot.

Thanks Dai, I'm also going to try and contact some of the OU guys and see if there are any possibilities there.

Top idea dan all behind this and happy to support in any respect wonder if we might approach a JISC college for a venue?

What a brilliant idea Dan! I may not be able to make it to UK (hardly anyone can these 'volcanic' days, but I will surely be following and promoting this event. Well done & best wishes!

I hope I haven't missed too much. This sounds like a terrific idea. I don't know if I can come up with a mini-preso but I would love to share ideas.

Thank you for all the messages of support!

Bob, we only launched the wiki last night so your right on time! Welcome to the Moodle party.

I've added another section to the Wiki, 'Suggested discussion topics:', for those that perhaps might not have the time to prepare a presentation but have a Moodle related question or idea they'd like to share. Could be right up your street Bob.

Great - I think all my teachmeet presentations so far have been moodle based! Would be great to see others.

Here's a question. First, some background. I am a tech coordinator for the middle school in a small independent school. This year, our division head asked all teachers to use Moodle for posting homework assignments on the calendar and handouts. So we have some "traction". My question is, what are some things I can do to sell teachers on using some of the many other features of Moodle?

I am also a classroom teacher and use labels, quizzes, forums, the wiki, and groups in my Moodle.

I'll be happy to host this, (Heythrop College, Uni of London). We're in Kensington so very central (in London terms!)

Thanks Nadeem, were working to sort out dates and venue as soon as possible and I must thank you for the offer. Will be in touch.

Bob, I think one way of selling Moodle is in how it can raise student participation, so if they can upload assignment work in the evening, rather than during class, you may raise the submission rates (we had a huge improvement in our college). If you aren't happy using web 2.0 content (Facebook etc) in school, then the blogs and forums can really get students to participate who may not feel happy in doing so in class. Make Moodle somewhere where you can showcase the students' work and they will feel involved (rather than it just being a place for teacher handouts). The list goes on and on....................

Nadeem said

Hi Clare, I can't see why not, I'm sure it'd be a great learning experience for newbies and oldies alike!

Dan - did you get my recent emails re the catering at all?

Dan said

Nadeem, apologies for not getting back to you sooner.

Carol Wrycraft said

Clare, if we didn't want newbies what sort of community would we be?
You should feel happy to talk to people and ask as many questions as you like, we were all newbies once :-)

Nadeem said

Hi Dan - need a reply from you v. soon please as I need to finalise details at my end, and I've got a really hectic week!

To everyone (particularly presenters) - what equipment do you need me to supply?

Ian Wild said

Hi Nadeem - I can bring my own laptop but I don't have a projector (too used to being in school where I don't need one :), but I'm sure I could scrounge one if I need one ). Will we have access to the Internet while we are there? Thanks, Ian.

Nadeem said

we have projectors and a computer (so you don't need to bring your laptop unless you want to) and wireless available

Hi everyone
Dai's presentation on editing quiz questions was an inspiration - thanks Dai. You were wondering how to add images of MP3 files to the multiple chopice answers. Try this code
Put the url address between the inverted commas for all things make sure you copy well, the spaces are neceessary.
I've tried it and it works well! Here are my tips
Resize the pictures before you upload them to your course files.
Right click on the picture link, click on Properties to get the pic URL
Have all the URLs copied and ready to go before you create the question
